Legal

I hate legal pages as much as the next surfer, but there's no avoiding them sometimes. I'll try and make this as quick and painless as possible.

Copyright notice

Unless otherwise stated, all material on this site (including code, design and content) is copyright © 2002 - 2004 Paul Waring. All rights reserved.

Use of material

You have my permission to download any material from this site and keep a copy for personal use. If you want to use any of my HTML, CSS, PHP etc. on your site then that's fine, but please remember to give me due credit.

However, you don't have permission to copy any of the content from my site and place it on your site, even if you include an appropriate accreditation. Whilst I appreciate the thought, I update my site frequently and some articles will be added/edited/removed. I like to know that people always have the most up to date version of my site, so I prefer to keep all the content on my server. Often people mirror content in good faith, but forget to update it, which causes confusion.

Of course, the above rules don't apply to "fair use" of my work as defined in copyright law. In other words, you are allowed to quote a reasonable amount of my articles in your own material, so long as you provide suitable attribution and don't try and pass the work off as your own. Blatant copying is plagiarism, but quoting from references is perfectly acceptable to me, academic institutions and UK law.

Use of photographs

All of the photographs on this site (except where otherwise noted) have been shot by me. They are all classed as original works, and as such I own the copyright on them. Under UK law copyright does not have to be registered (unlike trademarks, which do have to be registered) and is automatically granted on all original works.

I take useage of my photographs without permission extremely seriously; I have got one web site to delete one of their members' accounts because that person was using my photographs on his profile without my permission.

If you do want to use my photographs, you can request one of two types of permission:

  1. Use of my photographs on a web site for free and for an indefinite period, but with the condition that I can revoke this permission at any time and if I chose to do so you must remove the photographs from your site within thirty days or;
  2. A license to use my photographs on one particular web site for a specified period, renewable when that time period expires.

Permission can be requested for either individual photographs or a complete set (e.g. all of my publically available Leaver's Ball photographs).

If you link to my photographs directly (as opposed to making a copy on your server), regardless of whether I have given you permission to use them, I will invoice you for the bandwidth costs involved at the rate applied by my upstream provider for every part and whole gigabyte of data transferred.

Linking

Feel free to link to anything on this site that you feel might be of interest to your visitors; I don't operate a strict linking policy like some sites do. In fact, I'd be flattered if you think my site's good enough to link to in the first place!

If you do decide to link to my site, please let me know. I like to know who's sending visitors to my site, since the chances are your site will be in some way related to mine, and I may be able to return the favour.
